13th

The Chatham County Democratic Party is excited to present a monthly series of movies on important issues.  We hope you will be able to join us on Tuesday November 14th for 13th, at the Pittsboro Roadhouse.  Entry is free.  The Road House menu will be available if you want to order dinner or a snack.

Ava DuVernay’s Oscar-Nominated documentary, 13th, is a provocative examination of how systemic racism impacts the justice system.

America has more people behind bars per capita than any other country on Earth. And a disproportionate number of those inmates are African American. 13th argues mass incarceration is simply slavery by another name. We now have more African Americans under criminal supervision than all the slaves back in the 1850s. Mass incarceration as modern day slavery. The documentary explores the impact of decades of law and order politics and a prison industry that director Ava DuVernay says profits off punishment. Slavery, reconstruction, Jim C crow, the drug wars, the Reagan years, the Nixon years, the Clinton years and then the prison boom and how it mushroomed.

--THE NEW YORK TIMES

“Smart and powerful. As put together by DuVernay’s longtime editor, Spencer Averick, everything in ‘13TH’ illuminates what is convincingly presented as a sad and tragic story that we are still living today.”

Kenneth Turan | LOS ANGELES TIMES

“DuVernay creates a cogent, compelling argument in ‘13TH,’ which balances attractively filmed talking-head interviews with alternately heartbreaking and infuriating archival footage.”

Ann Hornaday | THE WASHINGTON POST

 “Incendiary, indelible and indispensable.”

Peter Travers | ROLLING STONE

“’13TH' is probably the most important film you’ll ever see. DuVernay’s film is downright incredible.”

Clayton Davis | AWARDS CIRCUIT
