Our Annual Dinner is named for a dedicated Chatham Democrat and offers an opportunity to celebrate our Democratic values.
Fleet Reddish is one of those colorful southern names that harkens back to earlier days. It was during her job as Chatham County Register of Deeds that she became interested in politics and sought the role of chair of the Chatham County Democratic Party. Fleet liked the work required of politics, enjoyed meeting the people and attending the Democratic conventions. During her time as County Chair, Fleet became very well known to several North Carolina governors starting with Governor Scott and was a close personal friend to the first lady Mrs. Scott. Fleet was known for being warm and welcoming to all Chatham County citizens. She was also a strong defender of democratic values when necessary
Our Keynote Speaker – NC Senator Jeff Jackson
A Life Dedicated to Public Service
Jeff is a dedicated public servant with a track record of taking on big challenges on behalf of others. His career in public service began after the attacks of September 11th, when he enlisted as a Private in the Army Reserve. He deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and ran over 80 missions into the tribal region north of Khandahar. After he came home he went to law school at UNC-Chapel Hill with the help of the G.I. Bill.
Jeff’s military service continues to this day as a Captain in the JAG Corps with the NC Army National Guard. He drills one weekend a month, two weeks a year with the 130th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade out of Charlotte.
Prior to his appointment to the state senate, Jeff worked as an assistant district attorney, prosecuting criminal cases on behalf of the people of North Carolina. As a prosecutor, he tried hundreds of cases, ranging from DWI to first degree murder. In the process, he saw up close the results of too little investment in public education, regional economic development, and mental health care.
Now the youngest Democratic state senator in North Carolina, Jeff wasted no time in getting to work on behalf of his district and the state. In his first ten days as a state senator, Jeff co-sponsored legislation that would expand Medicaid to cover an additional 500,000 North Carolinians, took a strong stand against fracking as a needless environmental risk, and voted to protect our public education system from enduring further cuts. In a short amount of time, Jeff has already set himself apart as a legislator who intends to get North Carolina back on track.
