Our Speaker: Secretary of State Elaine Marshall
Elaine Marshall has represented North Carolina as our Secretary of State since 1996. As the first woman in history elected to statewide office, she has shown her commitment to protecting investors and combating financial fraud in her multiple terms. She has accomplished the recovery of millions of dollars from Wall Street Banks to better protect and serve North Carolinian investors and charities. Another one of her main goals is helping small businesses create jobs; she has taken on lobbyists in Raleigh and reformed the state's ethics laws. Since her election in 1996, she has worked to make information and technology readily available and affordable for businesses in North Carolina.
Elaine Marshall is from Lineboro, Maryland; her father was a farmer and volunteer firefighter, and her mother was an organist in her family's church. She boasts humble beginnings, but she earned her law degree from Campbell University in 1981 and became a tough advocate for women who were victims of domestic violence. She then served in the NC Senate from 1993-1994, where she was named Rookie of the Year. Elaine describes her influences in her own words, "When I grew up I witnessed instances of inequity and discrimination in my community, directed at men, women, children, and families who would have little chance of realizing their dreams. So as a lawyer, I stood up for people without a voice...and as Secretary of State, I have made protecting consumers and creating jobs my top priorities."
Elaine has five step-children and seven grandchildren; in her free time she enjoys watching ACC Sports, cooking, and gardening. Help reelect our highly qualified incumbent Secretary of State, a woman who has always proved that she will fight for the protection of each and every North Carolina citizen.
