Lisa_Sorg.png2018 Keynote Lisa Sorg is an award-winning environmental investigative reporter with NC Policy Watch in Raleigh.  The North Carolina Press association awarded Sorg the 2017 Henry Lee Weathers Freedom of Information Award. Sorg, who has been recognized on multiple occasions throughout her career for journalism excellence and who is one of the nation’s preeminent environmental reporters, was recognized for her “efforts and exceptional work in advancing and upholding the cause of Freedom of Information.” In a fashion that is typical of her commitment to excellence in reporting, Sorg missed last night’s award ceremony in order to report on a public hearing regarding the planned expansion of the I-540 tollway in southern Wake County. You can read the story that she filed on that issue by clicking here

A journalist for 24 years, Sorg has a keen interest not only in the environment, but also the social justice impacts of pollution and corporate malfeasance.  She also recently won two second-place honors from the NC Press Association for her reporting on GenX, as well as an attempt by a private company to chemically treat Jordan Lake, a drinking water source for 300,000 people without adequate public engagement.

Before arriving at NC Policy Watch, she was editor of INDY Week in Durham for eight years and the San Antonio (Texas) Current for three.   In San Antonio, she covered the fight of a Latinx neighborhood over drinking water contamination originating at a nearby military base.

Sorg also worked at dailies and an alt-weekly in her home state of Indiana. There, she became interested in environmental reporting when she began covering PCB contamination in low-income neighborhoods in Bloomington, Indiana.  She lives in Durham, where in her off hours, she spends as much as time as possible outdoors.
