The Chatham County Democratic Party is excited to present a monthly series of movies on important issues. We hope you will be able to join us on Tuesday July 25th for The System, an episode from the America Divided series, at the Pittsboro Roadhouse. Entry is free. The Road House menu will be available if you want to order dinner or a snack.
The System – Policing and Mass Incarceration Common returns to his hometown of Chicago – a city on fire in the aftermath of the brutal police killing of teenager Laquan McDonald. With thousands of people in the streets, Chicago has become the epicenter of national debates around police violence, racism and accountability. Working with community activists and whistleblowers, Common discovers a decades-long pattern of police corruption and sophisticated cover-ups that stretch all the way to the mayor’s office. But Common also finds reason for hope. An energized movement in the streets mounts unprecedented pressure for reform. It’s clear that the system is broken — is it finally time for a change?
Doors open at 6 PM, screening at 6:30 PM. (approximately 60 minutes)
Daniel Bowes, of the NC Justice Center, will join us for a discussion on the issues raised by this program. Daniel joined the Justice Center as an Equal Justice Works Fellow in 2011. He advocates on behalf of individuals, families, and communities isolated from opportunities to prosper by the collateral consequences of criminal records. Daniel previously served as an Autry Fellow at MDC, Inc., and supervising attorney of Legal Aid of North Carolina’s Second Chance Employment and Housing Project. Having benefitted from his parents’ strength and dedication to moving beyond their youthful transgressions, Daniel proudly serves as vice-chair of Our Children’s Place, a nonprofit agency committed to the well-being of the 30,000 children in North Carolina with an incarcerated parent.
